Blackmores was originally built circa 1905 as the head gardeners dwelling and part of the estate of “Elsdon”, the largest house at West Hill and home to the Australian explorer John Billiatt, the
youngest member of John McDouall Stuart’s expedition of 1861-62, the first to cross Australia from Adelaide on the south coast to Van Diemen’s Gulf on the north coast. Billiat called his new house
“Wurlie”, the aboriginal word for an octagonal dwelling, a shape that is repeated in the house’s water tower and in the hall at “Blackmores”. The proposal seeks to provide additional accommodation transforming a two bedroom dwelling into a four bedroom dwelling with associated kitchen/living/dining/utility areas with new master en-suite bedroom. Group Emmett Design Architects were approached to remedy an existing unresolved layout through internal remodelling with new side extensions whilst retaining the character and existing features of the original building.
