Starlings is a sustainable and sensitive extension to a traditional cottage, located within a designated Conservation Area and the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The design carefully balances ecological enhancement with architectural innovation, responding directly to its unique setting.

• Feasibility & Concept Design (RIBA 0): Developing a respectful and sensitive vision with garden integration in collaboration with the client.
• Planning & Design Development (RIBA 1–2): Securing approvals through sensitive integration of new design elements with heritage.
• Technical Design & Detailing (RIBA 3): Coordinating material selection and architectural detailing, particularly for the wildflower and sedum roof.
• Construction & Project Management (RIBA 4): On-site oversight to ensure timely delivery, cost control, and design integrity.

Key Features:

• Charred Timber Cladding: The extension is wrapped in textured, dark-stained timber boarding that harmonises with the woodland surroundings.
• Living Green Roof: Planted with native wildflowers and sedum, the roof supports pollinators, improves insulation, and softens the visual impact of the extension.
• Landscape Integration: Nestled into the garden’s existing topography, the building maintains strong visual and physical connections with its natural environment.
• Warm, Sculpted Interior: A bespoke curved wall and exposed timber rafters define the interior, adding warmth and spatial generosity within a modest footprint.
• Low-Impact Design: Every aspect of the design is informed by sustainability—from material choices to planning compliance—ensuring a minimal environmental footprint.
